Oman Aluminium re-assessing expansion plans

OAPIL earlier said that it was planning to double its capacity to over 100,000 tonnes per annum (tpa), from 48,000tpa now as per its master plan.

OAPIL gets its feedstock — liquid aluminium — from Sohar Aluminium to produce rods and overhead conductors. The company has invested OMR15 million for the present plant.

The plan was to add one more production line with the existing plant, which produces aluminium and alloy rods and overhead conductors for the power industry.

The sales and profitability of OAPIL for the six-month period was in line...

Aughinish alumina refinery to switch to gas

This will reduce the sites overall environmental footprint, coupled with cash cost savings to reach USD$ 11-13 per tonne in the second half of 2014.
The three oil-fired boilers are now on standby while the two modern steam generators designed to produce a total of 300 tonnes per hour of reliable, high-pressure superheated steam have been commissioned. The shift from oil-fired boilers to gas-powered steam generators will result in the complete removal of all emissions associated with Heavy Fuel Oil.

Farnborough Airshow orders top $50 billion

Air Lease Corporation kicked off proceedings with a $6.9 billion launch order for Airbus’s Rolls-Royce Trent 7000-powered A330neo and added a $6.6 billion contract for 60 A321s. Aluminium prices hit a high

The aluminium market has benefited from a series of production cuts carried out by smelters globally, including Alcoa, Rusal, and Rio Tinto. Prices have also been boosted as inventories fell to a multi-month low. The improved outlook has boosted shares of Alcoa and Century Aluminium. More importantly, aluminium prices could remain strong as there is likely to be a supply deficit for a prolonged period of time.

Alcoa and Century Aluminium shares have been among the top performers this year. Year to date, Alcoa shares have gained more than 62% while Century Aluminium is up more...

Low metal prices halve Tajikistan H1 output

Mr Shavkat Bobozoda industry minister of Tajikistan said: "Lower aluminium output is caused by objective reasons which are partly linked to falling world prices for the metal."

The sharp drop in output in the H1 means that TALCO's production this year may turn out to be lower than its own pessimistic forecast made at the beginning of 2014.

TALCO said that in February it expected aluminium production to shrink by 30.7% to 150,000 tonnes this year. Hit hard by low aluminium prices, the company was forced to reduce output by 20.6% to 216,369 tonnes in...

Energy efficiency targets

“Boosting the solutions that EU industry can deliver for energy saving and climate change is the right thing to do in order to couple these goals with the EU growth and jobs agenda. Yet, more should be done and we will be part of the debate to demonstrate the energy efficiency potential we can deliver”, said Gerd Götz, Director General of the EAA.

Buildings currently account for 40% of Europe’s energy consumption in the EU and have a large potential for energy savings. Aluminium is the champion material to make existing buildings more...

Matalco to build remelting plant

John Pereira, vice president of operations for the Brampton, Ontario-based company, said a September 17 groundbreaking has been scheduled for the new plant.

Neither Pereira nor Robert Roscetti, Matalco's director of corporate development, would disclose projected capacity levels for the plant.

The site selection announcement had been delayed for months. Matalco is believed to have considered locations in Michigan, Indiana and Pennsylvania, as well as Ohio, for the plant that will produce its 6000 series extrusion-grade aluminum billet.

Matalco has...
